Understanding Conditioning: Unlock Your Authentic Self

Updated: Aug 24, 2023

Today we're going to take a deep dive into an often-overlooked subject: conditioning.Spoiler alert: It's not about hair products. Nope. We're talking about the kind of conditioning that screws with your head and makes you forget how rad you really are.

Conditioning isn't some abstract psychological term; it's a force that profoundly impacts our daily lives and our perception of self. Unraveling it can be the key to uncovering your authentic self, the person you were born to be.

Ever caught yourself thinking, "Why am I stuck in the same old crap habits?" or "Why do I always react like a neurotic squirrel?" Well, it's probably your conditioning whispering sweet nothings in your ear.

Growing up, we soak up behaviors, reactions, and beliefs like sponges. But sometimes, instead of becoming the Picasso of our lives, we end up painting by numbers.

It's like we're programmed by external factors, running on autopilot without even realizing it. But here's the deal: just as a computer can be reprogrammed, so can your brain. Yes, you read that right. You can rewire your thought patterns, reactions, and ultimately, your life.

Here's how to recognize that sneaky conditioning and wave it goodbye:

1. Spot the Repeat Offenders

The first step to beating conditioning is acknowledging it. It's like admitting you're the one who ate all the cookies. It's tough, but liberating. Look for patterns in your behavior. These can be behavioral traits, emotional responses, or thought patterns. Awareness is half the battle won.

2. Challenge Your Beliefs

Question the beliefs that you've held onto for years. Are they genuinely yours, or have they been passed down to you by society, family, or peers? Do they help you grow, or do they limit you? Be brutally honest. It's uncomfortable, but the only way to break through is to break free.

3. Introduce Change

Change can be daunting, but it's also a catalyst for growth. Start small. Try a new response in a familiar situation. Experience a different perspective. This doesn't mean you must alter who you are at the core. Instead, it's about being open to possibilities and exploring what feels authentic to you. A bit of change can be as refreshing as swapping your old boring cocktail for a fancy new one. You don't need a total personality transplant, just be open to tweaking the recipe. Trust me, your life will taste much better.

4. Seek Support

Seeking help isn't a sign of weakness; it's a demonstration of strength. Don't hesitate to reach out to a trusted friend, coach, or therapist who can guide you on this journey. Remember, even the world's best athletes have coaches.

5. Get Zen with It

Mindfulness isn't just for hipsters or yoga addicts. It's about being in the moment, whether that’s catching yourself mid-habit or appreciating a perfectly made sandwich. Some deep-breathing exercises or simple meditation can help. Or just eat the sandwich really, really slowly.

So there you have it. You’re not some life puppet being yanked around by your past or other people’s expectations. You're a rockstar who's just forgotten a few of the chords. But with a little tuning, you can get back to playing your own song.

Pick one of these tips and go! Once it feels as comfortable as your favorite pair of yoga pants pick another one. Don't underestimate the power of small changes! Once you take one step, develop the habit of saying goodbye to your conditioning and say hello to your true badass self. Remember, life's too short to not be the truest, weirdest, most fantastic you.

Keep it real,

Katie
