Happy New Year! I hope 2023 is off to a good start for you! I want to talk with you this month about consistency. Consistency is a word that I did not pay much attention to until after a conversation with a friend. She shared with me that her therapist told her what she lacked was consistency. This got me thinking and reflecting on my own life and what it means to be consistent.
What is consistency? When I Google this word I see many definitions so I am defining this word for myself. What consistency use to mean to me was taking an action over and over again on a regular/ daily basis until a goal or outcome is achieved. Once I healed a wound, or lost 10lbs or felt connected I noticed there was a pattern of no longer taking the consistent action to maintain that state.
Recently I have realized through reading a book called The Tools that you can’t and don’t stop when you reach the goal. Consistency isn't showing up everyday until the goal is met, it is showing up regularly until the goal is met and then continuing to show up to maintain that level of achievement. Initially that sounded very overwhelming but the good news is it does not have to be. When you are consistent an action turns into a habit and that behavior becomes automatic.
Also, when you stop being consistent in the things that you are doing to feel better you start to feel bad. Your emotions are messengers. That's your body's way of reminding you are getting off track. It's your body's way of getting your attention. It's saying “Yoohoo! Pay attention! There is something I am needing from you.”
For me it's all about small wins and goals that I can build on. When I fall off the wagon I can always get back on. Pick a small achievable goal, no matter how small, start somewhere. A great question to ask yourself is what is the smallest step I can take to get to where I want to be? Then do that. A few days, weeks, months later you ask the same question. What is the smallest step/action I can take to reach this goal? Over time you will be amazed at what this question will do for you, this one question can get you unstuck and moving toward your goal.
Questions are some of the most powerful tools you can use to create change in your life. You can only have one thought at a time (if you can have more than one thought at a time please call me because I want to hear all about it 😉). When you take the time to ask yourself questions, to get really curious with yourself you are creating space in your brain for solutions to emerge. You're turning that one thought into an answer instead of focusing on the problem.
